My postman (who is about to disqualify himself from getting any cookies) tends to stick mail into other mail AGAINST REGULATIONS. So I’ll go look at the Land’s End catalog and see if your card is in there.

This made me smile! We put up our first Christmas lights this year. Our old, old house electricity just won’t take much, but we decided to risk it because the girls love the colors, the sentiment, the beauty shining in the dark. They have asked for years, and now don’t even bother. We simply hear, “I wish WE could have lights on OUR house..”

We chose three short strings of star-shaped colored lights. They are long enough to run along the front edge of our porch. They are a different shape than our next-door neighbor, who thinks our last name is Jones, and has dripping icicles of lights hanging by every Thanksgiving evening. And they are multi-colored, because the girls love the pretties, even though Chris’ favorite are tiny white bulbs.

We brought them home and surprised the girls… and they each smiled that child’s wonder grin that doesn’t appear so often now that they’re older. It was so fun and special for me – probably one of our last “family” memories while they’re all still young and at home.

I just miss them a lot. I’m “healed” but it’s like I keep knocking against the scars and getting reminded.

I do have my little rebellions: I bought a really cheap and durable set of knives, which I put in the dishwasher and never sharpen. This is blasphemy in our family. Ha!

So sorry to hear about the loss of your family. It’s a tough road. My Mom has been gone 16 months and at times it seems the wound will never heal.

Thank you for writing this. What you said is right on. I’m missing a few people too. This time of year only increasing that “missing” feeling. Thanks for sharing your perspective on it. Christmas trees with voids… in it’s own way, that is inspriring.

Popping in from Holidailies… I bake A LOT through out the year. I hate it when something doesn’t turn out as expected! It’s just such a waste of ingredients and time. Good luck with the rest of your baking!
