Ornament Half Full
Today was the day to unpack the red and green boxes from the garage and bring Christmas inside. It was a bitterly cold day too, which helped some. I still feel cooped up and in need to a good long elliptical session, but one little corner of our world is red, green, gold and nutcrackery.
It is amazing what color can do. Most of us have heard that orange makes you eat faster, and that of course is why it’s a predominant color in fast food restaurants. I don’t know if that thinking still holds true, but that is what we would tell ourselves when we dined at Taco Bell or Whataburger.
I know that for me personally, color is a major part of my creative spirit. One of the reasons I think I wanted to take painting is because I wanted to experience the color. However, as I’ve discovered, paint out of a tube loses its excitement after a while. Now I’m itching to DO something to it, with it, in it… not just play with the color. That’s a sign, I suppose, that I’m almost out of my painting infancy!
Something I uncovered today is a set of clear glass ornaments that are “craft ornaments” presumably all ready for the glue gun, sequins, glitter and whatnot. I am staring at them, trying to think whether I will put something in them, on them or around them. As I continue to stare, I realize they are empty, ready to be filled, but in their emptiness they are full of potential. Once I embellish (ruin) them, they will be fixed pieces, and that will be that. The end of the creative process is in a product.
But if I work it right, I’ll have a new technique and some practice from the whole project, so that’s a net gain.
And as I type this, they are still sitting there — clear, glass, empty. Half empty. Or half full.
(If they turn out half decent, I’ll post a photo!)
These folks have been doing great things with ornaments lately, but I recalled this recent post when I read yours tonight. http://www.thisyounghouse.com/2008/12/fill-er-up/
Good luck!
OOOOh, those are awesome! I’ll have to put that in the hopper when I sit down to do them!
